Iranian Actress Released From Prison
Hollywood Rallies Against Irans Draconian Verdicts Against Filmmakers And Stars Marzieh Vafamehr, the Iranian actress who was sentenced to a year in prison and 90 lashes for appearing in the government-banned film My Tehran For Sale, has been released from prison, according to Amnesty International. According to the human rights organization, her sentence was reduced to three months and her lashing sentence was overturned; she was released Monday. The movie, an Australian production that wasn’t supposed to be seen in Iran but hit the black market, stars Vafamehr as an actress who is banned from working onstage by Iranian authorities. It shows Vafamehr without a headscarf, and other Iranian young people going to underground raves, smoking hashish and having sex before marriage. Meanwhile, the recent rash of harsh action against filmmakers in Iran has resulted in the imprisonment of three BBC documentary helmers and sentences for internationally acclaimed directors Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof that include jail, a ban from making movies and restrictions on leaving the country. Panahi’s sentence was recently upheld. Amnesty also said Iranian director Mojtaba Mir Tahmasb remains in prison after helming the documentary This Is Not A Film, which chronicled Panahi’s house arrest and was smuggled to France to debut at the Cannes Film Festival. (The filmmakers’) continued detention illustrates the Iranian authorities desperate efforts to stifle any form of dissent,” Amnesty Middle East and North Africa Deputy Director Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui said.

'Wild Animals Aren't Disney Characters': PETA Calls for We Bought a Zoo Warning
It was bound to happen eventually, and here we are: Three days after the Zanesville Zooicide that cost dozens of unleashed zoo animals their lives, PETA vice president Lisa Lange wants Cameron Crowe’s upcoming We Bought a Zoo to warn viewers off from wild-animal ownership. “We Bought a Zoo conveys the misleading and downright dangerous message that no special knowledge—just a lot of heart—is needed to run a zoo,” Lange said in a statement just over the transom at ML HQ, calling for the film to add a disclaimer discouraging the smattering of idiots impressionable enough to think amateur zookeeping is right for them. “As the tragedy in Ohio gruesomely illustrates, wild animals aren’t Disney characters. They have very special needs that all too often aren’t met by people who buy them on a whim because they think it would be ‘cool’ to own a tiger.” Fair enough, but I have to say that it really is pretty cool to own a tiger. Let me consult mine about this. What say you, Panjo? [via PETA]

Johnny Depp's 'Lone Ranger' Struggle: The Actor Weighs In
FROM MTV MOVIES: Much like the unforgivable and unpredictable nature of the American Old West, the plight of Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski's big-screen adaptation of "The Lone Ranger" has been quite a bumpy ride. REVIEW: The One Thing Spells Every Little Factor Yet Informs Us Nothing
As everyone knows right now, Matthijs van Heijningen Junior.’s The truth is not really a remake of John Contractor’s 1982 The One Thing, which wasn’t a real remake of Howard Hawks and Christian Nyby’s 1951 The One Thing from Another World. So we now have a couple of things which are only tangentially associated with the very first Factor, although the one thing concerning the third Factor is it describes how the one thing from the second Factor destroyed the Norwegian people who have been dead when that Factor being a factor. The One Thing from the third Factor essentially does exactly the same factor we had it do within the second Factor, therefore the third Factor most likely isn’t for you personally when the second Factor wasn’t your factor. Or possibly even when it had been. The One Thing — Heijningen’s Factor — develops from a world where everything must be described in meticulous, knowing detail. If Contractor’s movie opened up using the mystery of the Antarctic camping full of dead Norwegians, it’s no more sufficiently good to take that as face value: We have to understand what happened for them, and just how, and Heijningen has had it upon themself to explicate. The film does lots of speaking, figuratively speaking, without really lighting — towards the extent that lighting matters whatsoever inside a work of horror or sci-fi. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is Kate, a vibrant paleontologist-in-training who’s summoned towards the Antarctic by poker-faced Norwegian researcher Dr. Sander Halvorson (performed by Danish actor Ulrich Thomsen). Some people have discovered a spaceship that obviously crash-arrived in the region’s icy surface 1000's of years back. Nearby lay a frozen-solid beastie. Halvorson wants Kate to look at the creature, but he jumps the gun in removing a tissue sample from this. You are able to most likely guess why that’s an awful idea. Because the one thing isn’t really dead, and when an individual — or sled dog — is infected because of it (though just how that infection happens isn’t made obvious), it starts replicating and resembling that creature’s cells. So before very long, that Norwegian Antarctic explorer sitting alongside you may have a pink chicken carcass — filled with small shark’s teeth and giant insect pincers — jumping from his chest. Which means you are able to’t tell who’s human and who’s alien, so mistrust and paranoia breed faster than salmonella. Before lengthy Kate, the Norwegian people of the once august expedition, and 2 People in america who've become entangled within the mess (performed by Joel Edgerton and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) are thinking of getting each other suspiciously and analyzing each other’s dental work. That is correct. Heijningen and film writer Eric Heisserer — using, because the earlier Things did, John W. Campbell’s short story “Who Goes There” like a springboard — are extremely eager for their very own appealing sci-fi gimmick they have figures searching in each other’s mouths for clues. (The One Thing, it seems, can’t replicate teeth fillings.) Beyond that, the paranoia in The truth is your garden-variety kind, with individuals skulking about and casting accusing “Colonel Mustard within the dining area having a candlepower unit” glances. The effects are hokey and overcooked: You will find someone-horror gross-outs should you’re into that kind of factor, but mostly what you'll get are a lot of too-apparent leftovers in the Alien stockroom, including an array of moist innards, slimy tendons, dripping fangs and so on. The very first half-hour approximately of The One Thing — before the one thing begins causing havoc — is the greatest: For the reason that section Heijningen, showing the way the people and researchers look for a type of slapdash camaraderie within their snowy isolation, comes nearest to taking the atmosphere of cozy claustrophobia that’s the hallmark of The One Thing from Another World, a horror film that’s more suggestive than overt. But we are able to’t expect this Factor to become anything like this Factor. Heijningen is clever about knitting certain more knowledge about Contractor’s film in to the fabric of his: The film’s final shot is really a obvious echo of the start of Contractor’s. But Heijningen is really concentrated on spelling the solutions he does not remember that what’s left unsaid is generally what scares us probably the most. Today’s sci-fi leaves so very little towards the imagination, and The One Thing is inconsistent without coming to a type of impression — it starts vaporizing the moment the credits start moving. Virginia Woolf stated, “Nothing is only one factor. But a factor is certainly not whatsoever.”

Resident Evil 5's Undead Will Ride Motorcycles and Shoot Guns
Deep thought of the day: They say if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck. But if an undead creature rides motorbikes and shoots guns, is it still a zombie? If you’re Paul W.S. Anderson pulling together Resident Evil 5, the latest in your megahit zombie franchise, the answer seems to be yes. Speaking with Collider, Anderson confirmed that he’ll tap into the Las Plagas virus storyline for Resident Evil: Retribution, which begins filming this month in Toronto and will also shoot in Tokyo and Moscow. “We’re bringing in the Las Plagas parasite,” he said, “which I love because it allows the undead to basically run around, ride motorbikes, and shoot machine guns, which no one’s done before.” Yeah, you know why no one’s done that before? BECAUSE ZOMBIES DON’T RIDE MOTORBIKES AND SHOOT MACHINE GUNS. To be fair, the Las Plagas virus, which takes over the bodies of living things, is really a parasitic organism that gives its victims heightened strength and coordination, not to mention a collective hive brain-type control mechanism. And it comes straight from the video games, which means Anderson’s only being faithful to the Capcom canon. It’s fitting that as the Resident Evil franchise evolves from horror to action property (anchored by Milla Jovovich) that so, too does the definition of zombie undergo its own transformation. These aren’t really zombies anymore — and they sure aren’t the ambling, mindless walking dead of classic horror lore. Can we still technically call this a zombie franchise? Fans, meanwhile, should be pleased at the lengths to which Anderson is going to satisfy them; he’s introducing three familiar characters from the game series into the new sequel: Leon Kennedy, Ada Wong, and Barry Burton. So far only Johann Urb has been cast as Kennedy, joining returning series veterans Jovovich, Sienna Guillory, Boris Kodjoe, Colin Salmon, and Michelle Rodriguez. Director Paul W.S.
